Hungary will send all migrants to Brussels if EU does not comply, warns minister

“If Brussels wants to continue to impose a regulation on Hungary that makes it impossible to detain migrants at the external border, we will voluntarily transport them to Brussels free of charge,” Minister Gergely Gulyás said.

Hungary will send fresh migrants to Brussels at its own expense if the European Union does not ease sanctions against the country over its restrictive migration policy, Minister Gergely Gulyás warned Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference, Gulyás accused the European Commission of trying to force Hungary to admit migrants at any cost. Hungary is now heavily fined for the same practice as the EU rule on transit zones, Rmx.news writes.

Unlike other countries, Hungary receives no money from Brussels for border surveillance. That is why the government has asked the justice minister to look at ways to recover some of the costs through legal action against Brussels.

“If Brussels wants to continue imposing a regulation on Hungary that makes it impossible to detain migrants at the external border, we will voluntarily transport them to Brussels free of charge after following European procedures,” said Gergely Gulyás, who called the procedure unbearable and unfair.

Hungary fined €200M for breaking EU asylum rules

He added that as punishment, Hungary does not want to pay endless per diems and is happy to bring the migrants to Brussels to negotiate their further care from there.

In its June 2024 ruling, the European Court of Justice ruled that Hungary must pay a fine of 200 million euros for failing to change its policy on the treatment of migrants and asylum seekers at the border.

“The decision is outrageous and unacceptable,” Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a Facebook post at the time.

The Hungarian government, which has previously refused to implement the court ruling, will also have to pay a daily fine of 1 million euros until it fully implements the measures.
